Zakynthos is situated 9.5 Sea miles west of Peloponnes and about 8.5 Sea miles south of Kephallonia. The island is the third largest amongst the ionian islands. It has an area of 410 square kilometres and a coastline of about 125 kilometres. The topography of Zakynthos is very diverse. The eastern part of the island is mantled with valleys and plains, which extend with soft slopes until the sea and end in lovely bays with beautiful golden beaches. On the contrary, the west of the island is quite mountainous and contains numerous steep coast lines.
There aren't any high mountains, they are rather wide and so they fill up a large part of the island. The highest point of the island is "Vrachionas". It has an altitude of 758 metres.
As already mentioned, the island offers numerous nice beaches. The most important amongst them are Laganas in the south, Tsilivi and Alykes in the west. By clicking on the island ( the red arrow that points to the island ) you will get a larger and more detailed view of the island, where the different beaches and places are shown. By clicking on some of the places or beaches, you will get an image of the place or beach respectively.
In the vast gulf of Laganas, in the southeast, there are two abandoned small islands called Marathonisi and Pelouso. Amongst other things Marathonisi is very well known for the very rare turtles "Caretta-Caretta", where they lay their eggs.
